This year, New Year’s Eve comes with the disappointment that parties won’t be what they once were. And the lack of parties downtown is another major blow to the already struggling bars and restaurants.
December 31st is traditionally a busy day in the center as event coordinators and companies plan for the arrival of large crowds. Organizers would set up stages, block streets and make security plans.
This year, the streets of downtown Raleigh are quiet and empty – a very different scene from previous years.
In the past, more than 40,000 people came to see the iconic Acorn Drop – and the fireworks that followed.
The cancellation of this event, coupled with the 10pm curfew, is another hit for the restaurants and bars that tend to be packed this evening.
A restaurant owner told WRAL News he expects to earn just a quarter of previous years’ sales.
However, the locals can help out restaurants tonight. Business owners suggest purchasing takeout from a locally owned property to ring in the New Year with a good meal in the safety and comfort of your own home.
