The Chicago Cubs and Free Midfielder, Jake Marisnick, managed to reach a contract agreementMLB.com’s Jon Morosi first reported from his official Twitter account. So far, the details of the signature are not known, although it is expected that later numbers and duration will be released.
Marisnick, who turns 30 at the end of March, has spent most of his career playing for the Houston Astros, but he was with the Mets in 2020. A few hamstring injuries limited the speedy outfielder to just 16 games in the last tournament, although Marisnick was quite productive in 34 at bats, hitting .333 / .353 / .604 with a pair at home. runs and three doubles and five RBI’s.
That production level cannot of course be expected in the future. Marisnick has been a below average hitter for most of his time in the majors, though he has made up for that below average bat with above average speed and excellent glove work.
Marisnick’s speed dropped a bit in 2020, although the pair of hamstring strains certainly contributed. Statcast measured its sprint speed of 9.2 meters per second from 2016-19, but reduced it to 28.2 last year. He also topped the top 20 outfielders in the game on Statcast’s Outs Above Average every year from 2016-19, and has been seen as an elite defender.
