Cuban handball goalkeeper Alfredo Quintana dies at the age of 32

Alfredo Quintana, Cuban goalkeeper of the Portuguese handball team Porto, died this Friday in Portugal, where he was admitted in a very serious condition after undergoing a cardiorespiratory arrest this Mondayhis team reported to the press.

Born in Havana, Quintana was only 32 years old when he suffered a heart attack during training. Since then he has been treated in the intensive care unit of the São João Hospital.

After confirming his death, his team shared a condolence register on social networks assuring that the Cuban will be “always remembered” in the group.

Alfredo Quintana lived in Cuba until 2009. He arrived at FC Oporto ten years ago and in 2014, after becoming a Portuguese citizen, made his debut with the Portuguese team, amassing 72 international appearances.

The Antillean had managed to profile himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Portuguese league and also to profile himself as one of the most destabilizing players in his position at international level, both with the club and with the national team.

Last January, Quintana played a relevant role with the Portuguese team during the World Handball Championship in Egypt, an important event to showcase the good performance of the Portuguese team.

The Porto team also recently played the Champions League match against Meshkov Brest, in Belarus.

Portugal will play in Montpellier on March 12 and 14 against France, Croatia and Tunisia in the Olympic qualifying tournament for the Games in Tokyo.
