Exiled Cuban designer and artist Rolando Pulido died Friday night at the age of 58 in a hospital in the Bronx, New York City.

“Our beloved brother, Rolando Pulido, rested last night, from the heart grateful for all the solidarity we all convey to him to the end”, the writer Orlando announced Luis Pardo Lazo.

Pulido left Cuba at the age of 18 during Mariel’s exodus in 1980. Since that year he has lived in New York, where he has collaborated not only in designing and advertising images of emblematic places such as the Blue Note jazz club, Cooper’s bar, Strand bookshop or the stages of the legendary Saturday Night program. Live, has served on the cause for the freedom of Cuba.

Pardo, for his part, said earlier that Pulido is “one of the most creative designers in Cuban civil society” and has voluntarily been one of the creators of “his modern image” without asking for money.

It was the writer himself who launched a fundraiser days before to help Pulido, who was hospitalized and unable to walk.

“Our help has never been used for his physiotherapy. There was no time to reach that recovery phase. Rolando spent his last days in a hospital in the Bronx, surrounded by friends who could visit him, and cared for by knowledgeable and compassionate staff, ”he said.

As the author explained, Pulido, born in the province of Cienfuegos, “felt cold” and in solitude, he needed physical therapy that allowed him to walk again. “Like any beautiful man, like any young man,” this situation “has depressed his will to live,” he said.

Regarding the destination of the collection, Pardo added, “We immediately consider returning your generous assistance to all of you. Or propose a different use, always related to the work and memory of our Rolando Pulido, but with respect for his last wish not to pay public tribute ”.

“I am responsible for mediating with you on any proposed decision, as well as communicating with you one by one,” he added. “For years he has given us all the beauty of his work and the goodness of his soul,” he had previously commented on Pulido.
