Dr. Félix Antonio Cruz Jiminián said that “thousands” of violations of fundamental rights are committed every day and that this is the main reason why he aspires to become the new Ombudsman.
Cruz Jiminián, who is recognized for the social work he does through his private clinic, said that what he does the least in his facility is ‘research people’ and that he prioritises solving it when there is a social problem. is.
“I know there are a lot of questions that worry people about what will happen to the poor who visit my clinic and I can tell you that I am the doctor or maybe the worker who sees more people a day in the history of the Dominican Republic, but of the 100 people I see, 90 or 95, come with a social problem, ”said the doctor during his interview with the committee of the Chamber of Deputies responsible for shortlisting the Ombudsman and are alternates.
According to Cruz Jiminián, “there is a law that does not apply” to those citizens whose rights have been violated, and he believes the Ombudsman is in a place where they can turn.
“The Ombudsman does not have the power to imprison people, but to denounce them and bring them to justice. That is why I have decided to accept this position, ”he noted.
Measures to be taken
In the event that he was elected, the physician agreed with the former applicants who were interviewed that the foundation of the institution should be the culture and education of the population regarding their fundamental rights.
Likewise, it would count as a measure to reach the entire national territory and to places such as prisons where, according to the doctor, “unimaginable abuses and atrocities exist”.
“The ombudsman has a very large field, but the first step I would take is to put a suggestion box in every prison to find out what is going on there. The second, without even costing the ombudsman a cent, would be to visit all the counties and municipalities and in every school I am going to set up a moral and civic school and I am going to introduce a bill so that every public and private employee has and citizenship to gain access to a job ”.
Vaccine
In a different order, when asked if he would recommend the population to get the COVID-19 vaccine, the doctor was blunt.
“There is a general lack of culture in our country. Here everyone is talking on the networks. I saw someone tell people not to get vaccinated, if we hadn’t been vaccinated against polio we would all be dead or all disabled. The vaccine is the same minor disease, but it is capable of developing defenses. I have a high defense right now, but if it arrives at this point I’ll be the first to be vaccinated, vaccines are needed and everyone is doing it, in the United States, Germany, Russia they get them, if everyone is, because a third world country is not going to do it ”, he wondered.
On Tuesday, the Ombudsman Committee interviewed 20 candidates who aspire to become the head of this institution, as well as a deputy.
