Mayor Bill de Blasio said this Saturday afternoon during a celebration of a new vaccination site in the Bronx.
“Bronx will help lead the way, lead the way in New York City’s recovery,” he said.
When the Co-Op City site is at full strength, De Blasio says 1,000 will be vaccinated in the community every day.
“What a difference that will make,” he said.
According to the mayor, Co-Op City is one of the first places to get home-bound senior vaccinations.
“Now that we have the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, we can reach our home-bound seniors,” he said.
50 homebound seniors have already been vaccinated in Co-Op City.
The number of New Yorkers vaccinated is now more than 3 million.
Early Saturday morning, the Javits Center had started accepting round-the-clock appointments in an effort to get more New Yorkers vaccinated.
The state-run vaccination facility went into 24-hour mode.
Powered by the Johnson & Johnson vaccine approved last Saturday, doses began arriving in New York during the week.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is a one-time only, making it easier to get people vaccinated quickly.
Many were lucky enough to make an appointment on Saturday morning.
There was also some promising news from the mayor as he plans to make an announcement about high schools sometime next week – and when they can return to personal learning.
The news comes as positivity rates in the area continue to slowly decline.
The secondary schools returned last week.
The mayor says the goal is to have all students learn in person five days a week, teach a full day before the start of the next school year in September.
