The pharmaceutical company says a second dose can be administered between 21 and 42 days after the first.
In clinical studies, there is a 28-day gap.
President-elect Joe Biden has pledged to release all vaccine doses the government has.
That announcement raised concerns that some patients may not get their second dose when they should.
Moderna’s goal is to deliver 100 million doses by the end of the first quarter.

NY reports 3 new cases of COVID-19 variant
New York reported three new cases of the COVID-19 variant that were first identified in the United Kingdom, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday. One of the cases is a 64-year-old man from Massapequa, Nassau district. The other two are related to the first case discovered in Saratoga Springs state.
NYC opens vaccination sites for group 1b
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that five new vaccination sites will be open, one in each of the five boroughs, in the hope that city workers who are members of 1b will be allowed to be vaccinated. Category 1b includes frontline workers, daycare centers, firefighters and police and correction officers. The mayor also reiterated his call to the state to now let the elderly get the COVID vaccine. He said the city has 270,000 unused doses that could go to people over 75, the age cohort likely to die from the disease.
NYPD commissioner tests positive for COVID-19
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea has tested positive for the coronavirus. “He’s in touch with his executive staff. He’s at home and runs the department remotely,” NYPD spokesman Rich Esposito told ABC News.
Mega sites for vaccinations are opening at 2 NJ locations
The first two of New Jersey’s six “mega-sites” for vaccines are opening today – at Rockaway Townsquare Mall and Rowan College in South Jersey. Governor Phil Murphy toured the Rockaway site, in Morris County, at 8:30 am
Schools in Newark and Jersey City will remain closed until April
Due to the high transmission rate of COVID-19, students enrolled in Jersey City and Newark public schools will remain in Phase I of distance learning through April 21, 2021, both districts announced Friday. Jersey City and Newark are the two largest cities in New Jersey.
