COVID Live Updates: CDC publishes vaccine guidelines for people with underlying conditions

NEW YORK (WABC) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have new guidelines for people with underlying medical conditions when it comes to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Officials say people with weakened immune systems and an increased risk of a serious case of coronavirus can get the vaccine.

However, the CDC says there is a chance some will experience a diminished immune response to the vaccine.

Those with underlying medical conditions should check that they are not allergic to anything in the vaccine before getting it.

NJ warehouse party arrested, organizers arrested
Police in New Jersey held a big party in a warehouse with more than 200 people inside. The weekend meeting in Newark was an extreme violation of the 10-person indoor limit due to COVID-19 restrictions. The party was held in a warehouse on Libella Court, where illegal gambling also took place. Police say the party’s hosts also served alcohol without a license. Two women accused of organizing the event are now facing several charges.

Cuomo vows to tackle vaccine fraud
Gov. Cuomo announced that anyone involved in fraud to receive or administer the vaccine outside of the criteria set by the NYSDOH will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Cuomo will issue an Executive Order to increase fines for providers who willfully override the prioritization. Administration to an individual who knowingly does not qualify could result in a fine to the provider of up to $ 1 million and revocation of all state licenses.

The population with priority for vaccination in New York is expanding
Gov. Cuomo said those eligible for the vaccine are expanding this week to employees of emergency care centers, those administering the vaccine, and residents of OASAS facilities.

Next week, the criteria will be opened to outpatient caregivers and public health workers, including those conducting COVID tests.

The Novavax COVID-19 vaccine ranks 5th to initiate Phase 3 trials in the US
A massive study of another COVID-19 vaccine candidate begins Monday as states in the US continue to roll out scarce supplies of the country’s first shot options.

The US has allowed the emergency use of two vaccines, one made by Pfizer and BioNTech and the other by Moderna, but the doses will be rationed for months.

The Novavax Inc. made candidate is the fifth to reach final testing in the US. It takes about 30,000 volunteers to prove whether this vaccine – a different strain from its Pfizer and Moderna competitors – really works and is safe.

Why getting a COVID-19 vaccine doesn’t mean you should stop wearing a mask
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the US and more than 9.5 million doses have been distributed.

While these developments mark a historic moment and hold much promise, that doesn’t mean Americans will be able to stop wearing masks anytime soon. CNN Medical Analyst Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and visiting professor at George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, explains why.

New apps enable COVID-19 vaccine passports for travel
With coronavirus vaccines starting to roll out in the US and abroad, many people may dream of the day when they can travel, shop and go to the movies again. But to be able to do those activities, you may eventually need something besides the vaccine: a vaccination passport application.

Several companies and technology groups have begun to develop smartphone apps or systems that allow individuals to upload details of their COVID-19 tests and vaccinations, creating digital references that can be displayed to concert halls, stadiums, cinemas, offices or even enter countries.

Indiana black doctor died of the coronavirus for weeks after accusing the hospital of racist treatment
A black doctor died of COVID-19 weeks after describing a white doctor putting her pain and worries about her treatment away while she was in a hospital in Indiana.

Dr. Susan Moore died on Dec. 20 of complications from COVID-19, her son told the New York Times. The internist died about two weeks after she shared a video accusing an Indiana University Health North Hospital (IU North) doctor of ignoring her pain complaints and medication requests because she was black, even though she was both a patient and a doctor self.

In a video posted earlier this month, she filmed herself from a hospital bed and shared her experiences at IU North. Moore said her doctor brushed off her symptoms and told her, “You’re not even short of breath.”

New COVID protocols for certain airline passengers
Passengers coming to the US from Great Britain must provide a negative COVID test. The new CDC guideline also requires test results to be known 72 hours or less before departure, and arises from concerns about the new coronavirus variant.
Airlines must confirm negative test results for all passengers before boarding the aircraft. If a passenger chooses not to take a test, the airline must deny that passenger boarding.

Highest TSA screening since the pandemic hit

NJ long-term facilities to receive first vaccines after delay of distribution

New Jersey has lost more than 7,200 long-term care residents to COVID-19, which makes them among the first to get vaccinated. The state is preparing to vaccinate 125,000 of those residents in the coming weeks, and 90 facilities expect to have access to the drugs this week, but the vaccinations are taking place a week late after the state missed a federal deadline for paperwork.
