Covid is slowing down in the world, except in Latin America

The coronavirus pandemic has slowed around the world this week, except in Latin America, where the situation continued to worsen, according to an AFP database.

The number of diagnosed cases (an important indicator) nevertheless reflects that some of the actual number of infections and cross-country comparisons should be viewed with caution as testing policies differ from country to country.

After peaking, the global pandemic slowed this week, with 634,200 new cases registered per day (12% less than the previous week), according to an AFP balance sheet to Thursday.

Only Latin America and the Caribbean registered an acceleration of the epidemic this week (+ 6%), with 120,900 new cases daily. This area has already made the greatest progress in the past week.

In the rest of the regions, the number of new infections decreased: -24% in the United States / Canada, -17% in Africa, -12% in Europe, -2% in Asia and the Middle East. The virus is practically no longer circulating in Oceania (22 daily cases, -16%).

This week, Europe passed the United States / Canada with 221,000 infections daily, compared to 196,100. Although both regions account for two-thirds of new infections in the world, the stock is on a downward trend compared to previous weeks
