Covid deaths in England and Wales are rising to their highest levels since April

Deaths related to Covid-19 in England and Wales rose to the highest since the first wave of the disease, amid warnings from the government that the British strain of the virus could be more deadly than first thought.

The number of fatalities with the disease rose nearly 20% to 7,245 in the week ending Jan. 15, the Office for National Statistics said Tuesday, the pandemic’s third highest toll. The number of fatalities in London, which lies at the center of the current outbreak, is more than 84% above the five-year average for the second straight week, the data shows.
