COVID-19 senior vaccine clinic attracts hundreds of people in Inland Empire

LAKE ELSINORE (KABC) – Before the sun came up, a line of cars snaked through a Lake Elsinore street in front of Diamond Stadium.

The site is a super vaccination clinic exclusively for people over 65.

David Hollingsworth, 84, waited an hour before getting his Covid-19 shot.

“I’m looking forward to the second so we’re done. I want to get on a plane, fly back and visit my son and his kids in Connecticut,” Hollingsworth said.

While he had an appointment, there were many in the line who didn’t.

James Kennedy, 87, came up with a newspaper article about the vaccination clinic.

“I have diabetes. I just took my insulin shot. I had two open heart surgeries. I don’t know about an appointment. Nobody ever said anything about an appointment,” Kennedy said.

He wasn’t alone.

Many seniors in line cited the lack of tech knowledge or even a home computer for the confusion, along with the long waits on the phone.

“I must have called 20 different phone numbers that we called directly from the California state health department and they gave us Riverside, but no one answers the phone,” said Murrieta’s Jay Adams.

Earlier this week, Riverside County made 5,600 vaccine appointments available to its elderly population, which were quickly rounded up.

“What we want to do is help people, we don’t want to turn people away, but it’s so important that people follow protocol by getting those agreements,” said John Welsh, Riverside County spokesman.

In the end, provincial officials did not dismiss seniors for lack of employment.

The relief at the gesture was clear.

Riverside County is stressing to the public because of the limited vaccines that people should make an appointment. They expect to vaccinate an estimated 700 to 800 people in Lake Elsinore on Saturday.
