COVID-19 Philadelphia: City relaxes some restrictions; only sports attendance to be allowed

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – Philadelphia officials announced Friday that several restrictions put in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic will be relaxed as infection rates continue to decline and vaccination rates rise.

Among the announcements: Some fans are allowed to attend sporting events.

Dr. However, health commissioner Thomas Farley said the relaxed restrictions depend on consistent, universal mask use.

Monday, March 1, the following will come into effect:

SPORTS EVENTS

– Meetings are allowed up to state limits

In total -2,500 people for outdoor events, 500 people in total for indoor events

“If the state eases its boundaries further, we will consider whether we want to match that,” Farley said. “It’s one step closer to returning to normal.”

This is good news for Phillies fans as Citizens Bank Park is an open-air venue. The Phillies home opener is April 1, and season tickets are on sale.

However, fans are not yet admitted to the Wells Fargo Center for Sixers and Flyers games.

The total number of people allowed includes not only fans, but also executives. The WFC said it would need more than 500 field workers for a match when fans are in attendance.

“We are in direct communication with city and state officials to determine when we can further expand our capacity and welcome fans to the arena,” said Valerie Camillo, President of Business Operations for the Philadelphia Flyers and Wells Fargo Center.
