Newly reported Covid-19 cases in the US were down from the day before, but deaths were up as the average number of new cases per day in the country was on a downward trend.
The country reported more than 54,000 new cases on Tuesday, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University and published early Wednesday morning. That figure can be updated later in the morning. Tuesday’s figure was down from 67,933 a day earlier and 77,878 a week earlier.
The seven-day mean of newly reported cases was 67,122 on Monday, and the 14-day mean was 67,940, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Johns Hopkins data.
When the 7-day average is lower than the 14-day average, it indicates that the number of cases is decreasing. Monday was the third day in a row when that was the case, after 10 consecutive days when the seven-day mean was higher than the 14-day mean.
There were 767 Covid-19-related deaths reported in the US on Tuesday, data from Johns Hopkins shows, up from 477 a day earlier, but down from 824 a week earlier. The seven-day mean number of deaths per day was 714 on Monday and the 14-day mean was 840.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of three million vaccine doses were administered per day in the past week. In total, 213.4 million doses have been administered, out of the 272 million doses distributed. About one-third of American adults have been fully vaccinated, and more than half have received at least one dose, the CDC said.
North Dakota is offering free Covid-19 vaccinations starting Wednesday to Canadian truckers traveling from the province of Manitoba, the first coordinated cross-border vaccination program between the US and its northern neighbor.
Canada is struggling to get its vaccination program going, while the US continues to expand access to its citizens.
Some of the effects of the pandemic are starting to reverse. Many students are beginning to recover from academic setbacks caused by the pandemic, according to a report released Tuesday on new test data. But rising CO2 emissions this year are on track to reverse much of last year’s sharp reduction.
In total, nearly 31.8 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the US and more than 568,000 people have died. Worldwide, more than 142.9 million cases have been reported, and more than 3.04 million people have died.
