Controversial triumph of Adrien Broner against a Puerto Rican

Puerto Rican fighter Jovanie Santiago had against former four-division champion Adrien Broner Saturday against what some media outlets described as “a robbery” during a poster presented by Premier Boxing Champions held at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

According to Showtime’s statistics, Santiago Broner dominated in hits 207-98, in jabs 83-49 and in power punches 124-49, but apparently Broner’s awakening in the final rounds caused the judges to make the decision. In the ninth, he cut Santiago under the left eye.

‘I want to go home and watch my fight. He hadn’t fought in two years. I felt good and felt like I had won the fight. I feel like I beat him with the shot, frankly. It feels great to have my hand up, ”Broner said in the post-game interview.

Others evaluating the challenge, such as Showtime’s Steve Farhood, saw a different fight. Farhood saw it 114-113 in Santiago’s favor. The Bad Left Hook portal, which said Broner “looked moldy” and elicited mixed reactions on his return, saw it 114-113 for Broner after a controversial point subtracted from Santiago, which would have left a draw.

Santiago, 31, told CBS Sports after the fight that “this doesn’t surprise me. Broner did a great job. The decision could have been tipped anyway. Not to say he thought he was losing the fight, but he could have gone either way. He fought very well and made up his mind. Boxing fans know who I am now, but to win this fight I think I had to put a little more pressure on to succeed, ”said the Puerto Rican.

Social media also saw different opinions about the decision. For example, former British and European champion Enzo Maccarinelli wrote that “Broner has not won that much in any way”.
