The VAR has arrived at Concacaf. In a statement, the regional football association confirmed that the use of video referees will be implemented in the Concacaf Champions League competitions and the Gold Cup national team tournament next year.
CONCACAF is one of the few confederations in the world that had not yet implemented the technology in its competitions, Conmebol and UEFA has been in use for several years.

It was implemented by FIFA for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, followed by European competitions. This will be an advance as it is currently only used in the region in the MLS of the United States and the Liga MX of Mexico.
“Several tournaments planned for this year, including Concacaf national team competitions by age group, would be critical opportunities to test the VAR and give our referees more experience. The cancellation of these events due to the pandemic has made our work difficult in this area.” , says Concacaf.
He then added: “Despite these challenges, Concacaf will introduce VAR in the 2021 edition of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League (SCCL) and the Concacaf Gold Cup 2021.
For the 2021 edition of the Concacaf Champions starting in February, the Honduran teams Olimpia and Marathón have already been classified. They are joined by the Mexicans Cruz Azul, Monterrey, León and América. Plus those from MLS and Central America in addition to the 15 participants.
The VAR will also be used in the 2021 Gold Cup played in the United States in June, where the Honduras national team is classified and will be seeded to play against Panama, Granada and Qatar in Group D.
