Companies developing apps to upload vaccine passports

Experts speculate that for any return to the normal pre-coronavirus world of overcrowded concerts, sporting events, movies and flying abroad, a person may require a vaccine passport, CNN reported on Sunday.

To prepare for such a scenario and give individuals convenient permission to perform these activities, several companies are developing smartphone apps that allow people to easily upload details of their coronavirus tests and vaccinations.

An example of this is the Common Trust Network, an app developed by non-profit organizations with the goal of creating a reliable model for validating the health status of individuals while traveling. Common Trust Network already partners with several airlines and hundreds of health systems in the United States

The group has created a CommonPass app that allows users to upload relevant medical information, such as a vaccination certificate, which can generate a health certificate or QR code card that can then be displayed to authorities without disclosing sensitive information.

This means that “you can be tested every time you cross a border,” Thomas Crampton, The Commons Project’s chief marketing and communications officer, told CNN. “You can’t get vaccinated every time you cross a border.”

Large tech companies are also working on similar projects. For example, IBM developed its own app, the Digital Health Pass, which allows companies and locations to customize indicators that they should be required to participate, such as coronavirus tests, temperature checks, and vaccination records.

Credentials related to those indicators can then be stored in a mobile wallet for easy convenience.
