Colder than average Saturday with up to 8 cm of snow possible

DETROIT Welcome to Saturday, Motown.

Snow returns for the first of this weekend. A little bit of sun will return on Sunday. It will be much colder than average all weekend. More snow is forecast early next week with a major storm on the east coast.

Saturday morning it will be very cold with snow arriving a few hours before sunrise. Gusts and light snow begin around 4 a.m., while cool morning temperatures begin in the low and middle teens. Wind chills are in the single digits and close to zero.

Snow will be scattered as it continues to fall during breakfast and by lunch hour. It will be mild to moderate at times. Temperatures remain well below freezing point; in the higher teens. Soft build-ups, up to one inch or more, will be common throughout the region. Snowflakes will stick to sidewalks and streets.

Customers shopping last minute for Valentine’s Day need an early start to find cards and gifts early to avoid more accumulation, but don’t rush. Ramps, bridges and viaducts will be especially tricky but not impossible to navigate. Also be careful when walking as we don’t want to slip and fall.

Saturday afternoon it is sometimes cold and snowing. It is difficult to see due to falling and drifting snow. So watch your speeds and distance while driving. Also stay alert for pedestrians and salt trucks on a wide berth. Another centimeter is possible by noon.

Snow totals from today’s snow will generally be 1 to 2 inches with some areas along the I-94 and south of the M-59 receiving as much as 8 inches by the end of this evening.

Snow showers decrease on Saturday evening. We still have to dress in layers with temperatures returning to the teenage years.

Saturday evening will be mostly to partly cloudy and freezing. Nighttime lows are in the single digits with chills near or below zero.

Please keep practicing your keeping warm habits. Do not use stoves or ovens to keep warm. Move all space heaters away from flammable objects.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Sunday. It’s a great day to snuggle up with your sweetheart or spend time with family. It will be partly sunny and cold. Afternoon temperatures will be in the low 20s; ten to fifteen degrees below average.

Short snow showers return, Sunday evening and President’s Day, Monday. An inch of snow is possible, Monday, with snow falling mainly in the morning. The daytime temperatures are in the middle and higher teens. Another day to layer up when you go sledding or doing something else outside.

A separate big storm passing the Appalachians will be big enough to bring more snow Monday evening and Tuesday. More than an inch of snow is possible, but it is too early to say what the exact accumulations will be. That said, don’t be surprised to get your snow shovels back on Tuesday night or Wednesday. The maximum temperatures on Tuesday are almost 20 degrees.

Wednesday will be partly sunny and cold with highs in the low 20s after morning lows in the single digits.
