A botched drug trade has resulted in the accidental shipment of banana shipments containing cocaine to Canadian supermarkets, authorities said.
Police in Kelowna said on Tuesday that 21 pounds of cocaine was shipped from Colombia as part of the botched drug deal, Global News reported.
“Our investigation leads us to believe that these illegal drugs were not intended to end up in Central Okanagan, but that they arrived here in the Okanagan Valley as a result of a missed pickup somewhere along the way,” said Jeff Carroll, a officer in the Kelowna Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
The discovery was originally made by workers at a Kelowna supermarket who found 12 packets of cocaine hidden under a banana shipment in February 2019.
Later that day, another supermarket owner contacted authorities to discover the drug in fruit deliveries as well.
Police seized the two loads of cocaine, estimated at more than 800,000 doses, and started an international investigation.
