Coast Guard rescues the boat south of Yabucoa

Coast Guard personnel in Puerto Rico rescued a man adrift on a sailboat 114 nautical miles southwest of the Yabucoa coast.

In a press release, the Coast Guard identified the vessel’s operator as Carl Michael Corey, 39, a citizen of the United Kingdom.

He noted that Corey was sailing alone on board the 11-meter sailboat last Wednesday, when he was adrift in the middle of the six-foot waves, because his sails broke their sails and he ran out of fuel.

Fortunately, a Hong Kong-flagged freighter became aware of the situation and was able to send the call for help.

Another container ship under the Singapore flag remained in the area to serve as a communications platform when the Coast Guard boat arrived from the base in Mayagüez.

Corey was successfully rescued without injury and transferred to Mayagüez, where customs and border security will assist him to continue his journey.
