Cincinnati Bearcats hire Wes Miller as new men’s basketball head coach

Cincinnati announced on Wednesday that it has hired former UNC Greensboro coach Wes Miller as its next men’s basketball head coach.

The school said in a statement that Miller will be given a six-year contract.

Miller has been with UNCG for 10 seasons. Over the past five seasons, he led the Spartans to three regular season championships and two NCAA tournaments. UNCG has finished 13-5 or better in the Southern Conference in each of the past five seasons.

“I am honored to lead such a legendary program and am excited to get to work,” Miller said in a statement. “I can’t thank UNCG enough either, because I wouldn’t be here without my players and athletic director Kim Record. Coaching the Spartans has been extremely rewarding for the past decade.”

Last season, the Spartans won both the regular season and conference tournament titles in the SoCon, before dropping to Florida State in the first round of the NCAA tournament with four seeds.

Miller, 38, was one of the lead candidates for the head coaching position in North Carolina earlier this month before the Tar Heels decided to hire Hubert Davis to replace Roy Williams. Born in North Carolina, Miller played under Williams at Chapel Hill. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Elon and High Point before moving to UNC Greensboro in 2010 as an assistant coach. A year later, he was promoted to head coach.

Miller replaces John Brannen, who was fired after two seasons last week after an investigation into the program. The school put Brannen on leave in early April after six players entered the transfer portal in the first three days after the end of the season.
