China is concerned that its young men will become too ‘feminine’

A recent report from Ministry of Education of China notes that the majority of young men in the country have become too “feminine”.

The analysis, published on the ministry’s website, caused controversy and was classified as sexist by many internet users, others believe that the Chinese male celebrities and artists they are partly responsible for the social phenomenon.

The “Proposal for the prevention of feminization of men and adolescents“recommends schools to completely reform their physical education offerings and to strengthen the hiring of teachers trained in these areas.

The Chinese government recommends recruiting retired athletes and those with a sporting background and “vigorously developing” certain sports, such as football, with the aim of “cultivating the masculinity of students”.

China is one of the countries where the media often features impeccable and “socially responsible” stars.

“Weak, shy and self-destructive”

Last year, government adviser Si Zefu said many of the young men in China had become “weak, shy and self-destructive”.

He said there was a trend among young Chinese men towards “feminization” that “would inevitably endanger the survival and development of the Chinese nation” unless it is “effectively managed.”

The official said the home environment was partly to blame, as most Chinese children are raised by their mothers or grandmothers.

He also noted that the growing appeal of certain male celebrities meant that many guys’ no longer wanted to be ‘army heroes’.

He therefore suggested that schools should play a greater role in ensuring that young Chinese receive a balanced education.
