After 50 years, our country was again able to receive the award from the Karolinska Institute of Sweden, but this time with a scientific contribution for humanity, a milestone for Latin America, which has only 5 awards in different fields of science.
The Chilean scientist Ricardo Maccioni has two award nominations Nobel Prize in Medicine 2021, for his contributions to the knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease. The Doctor of Science is an academic from the University of Chile and has been leading the International Center for Biomedicine for more than 30 years, dedicated to the search for a cure for this neurodegenerative disease.
Maccioni has devoted herself to studying the behavior of neurons and the microtubules contained within them since the 1970s.
In the 2000s, the scientist was part of the study Uniform Theory of Neuroimmunomodulation, allowing the development of the first biomarker to detect the origin and early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.
He is currently continuing his research work and will be published in the journal Journal Alzheimer’s Disease his new study called New Frontiers in the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Alzheimer’s, which proposes an integrated approach that includes preventive factors and pharmacological approaches for the future management of the disease.
