Chile leads all of Latin America in the field of vaccination against Covid-19

(CNN Español) – Chile began vaccination against Covid-19 on Christmas Eve, the same day as Mexico and Costa Rica, and just a few days before Argentina. Less than two months later, the figures show unreservedly that it is the leader in Latin America and that it is also positioned well above the global vaccination average.

Chile has about 19 million inhabitants. Chile’s results compared to Mexico, Argentina and the rest of the region

How can these figures compare with the results for the rest of Latin America? The portal Our world in data, from the University of Oxford, shows the evolution of vaccination in each country. The graph below shows the number of injections administered in the region per 100 inhabitants. In figures collected up to Feb. 11, Chile leads with more than 8.39 doses per 100 people and is followed by far by Brazil with 2.07 doses per 100 people. Third, fourth and fifth place are held by Costa Rica (1.47 per 100), Argentina (1.27 per 100) and Mexico (0.56 per 100) respectively. You can view the details of the results here.

In December, the vaccinations with the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech started. In contrast, the mass vaccination that has been underway since February 3 began after the arrival of doses of the Chinese vaccine from Sinovac (which, incidentally, is the vaccine that President Sebastián Piñera received on February 12). The government confirms that it will receive a total of more than 10 million of this vaccine in the first quarter. On the basis of the vaccination plan, new sections of the population are authorized every day to receive the injection, which the Ministry of Health says is free “to all groups defined as priority”.

The vaccine is also voluntary. In this sense, before the vaccinations started, the authorities had stated that it should be mandatory for some groups. However, under the current plan, each person decides whether or not they want the leak.

According to Johns Hopkins University, Chile has more than 768,000 cases of coronavirus to date. If it is number 24 worldwide.

A look at vaccination against covid-19 in the world

To have the most general view of vaccination on a global level, this map below shows where each country is located. According to the division that makes Our world in data On the basis of the available data on vaccination campaigns, Chile, along with many European countries, including Canada, belongs to the segment of countries that administered between 3 and 10 doses per 100 inhabitants. For example, Argentina and Brazil are in the segment that gives between 1 and 3 injections per 100 people. Mexico, for its part, among those who vaccinated less than 1 in 100.
