Chicago Weather: Residents dig after the winter storm left a layer of ice, snow and melting snow on New Year’s Day; expected more

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago residents dig out Saturday after a blast of winter weather Friday that brought snow, ice and rain to the area. And more snow is expected this weekend.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation began clearing snow from residential streets early Saturday.

Illinois state police said the winter fallout caused at least a dozen incidents during the night.

There was also a crash on a smooth Lake Shore Drive around 6:30 PM. in which a 26-year-old woman was injured.

The Chicago area only saw its first major storm of the season earlier this week, with several inches of snow and some icy rain.

More snow is expected past midnight early Sunday morning, said ABC 7’s meterologist Greg Dutra. It may drop as much as 3 inches, but a widespread 1 to 2 inches is expected south of Interstate 80, with lighter totals to the north.

In some areas under Friday’s ice storm warning, they were expected to see up to half an inch of ice. Other areas could also see about a tenth of an inch of ice.

A wintery mix of sleet and freezing rain began to migrate to the southwestern suburbs after 7 a.m. Friday, reaching the city after 10 a.m. Ice buildups would be highest in places like La Salle, Morris, and Pontiac, but Naperville, Joliet, and Kankakee could see significant frosting as well.

There have been reports of 0.25 inches of ice buildup from Valparaiso to Kankakee and as much as 0.37 inches in Grundy County, said ABC 7 Chicago meteorologist Larry Mowry.

By evening, the mud of the day has again frozen to ice.

Multiple crashes were reported on the Dan Ryan Expressway, and multiple spinouts on I-80 and Interstate 57 in the southwestern suburbs, and ice-covered trees and cars.

People could also be seen shuffling cautiously in the northwestern suburbs.

“We’ve all gotten through 2020, and if this is what 2021 has to offer, we’re ready,” said Chicago resident Alex Jay.

The Illinois Department of Transportation loaded a revolving fleet of trucks with salt into Villa Park, and more than 200 plows and salt trucks attempted to clear the streets of Chicago.

Until 5 p.m., light rain and winter mix fell through the entire area without significant ice formation as temperatures remained above or above freezing. Between 5:00 pm and 11:00 pm, temperatures were expected to drop and there was expected to be between the 1 and 4 inch show, with higher totals in the northern suburbs.

Lake (IL) County and northern Cook County can see snow totals in excess of 4 inches as the lake improves, said ABC7 meteorologist Larry Mowry.

ComEd said 112 power outages had been reported as of 3:10 pm affecting 2,910 customers across the system. The worst affected area was Kankakee County, where 690 customers were without power. In Chicago, 178 customers have no power, the company said.

In Northbrook, the snow seemed heavy and wet enough to bring down some of the power lines.

A similar situation occurred in Mackinaw, near Peoria, but flames and smoke were visible there.

It happened just after 8pm on Shermer Road in the center of Northbrook. Some lines spark on the wet road surface, but ComEd was able to fix the problem quickly, Northbrook police said.
