Chicago mayor orders teachers to return to class as unions intensify

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is ordering teachers to return to class amid an ongoing dispute between Chicago Public Schools and the teachers’ union.

“All teachers, pre-K through 8 and cluster teachers must report,” Lightfoot said in a news conference Sunday evening. “If you don’t have approved accommodation, we expect to see you back in class. Those who don’t report for work… we’ll have to take action. Let’s avoid that.”

Lightfoot said the Chicago Teacher’s Union did not show up for the negotiations on Sunday, but said it hopes the union leaders will continue to negotiate.

“We waited all day [Sunday] to start personal negotiations, “said Lightfoot.” We stay up all night to make a deal. We’ve been waiting for the CTU. ‘Where are they? Why didn’t they come back to us? ”

CPS’s original plan for a return to class targeted a February 1 start date, but fell through after a vote by the Chicago Teachers Union earlier this month. Lightfoot said parents should not take their children to school to learn in person on Mondays, encouraging them to send children to learning centers.
