Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot denied what she called “ homophobic, racist and misogynist rumors, ” claiming she intended to step down on Sunday.
The mayor of the country’s third-largest city denied it after a night of rumors on Twitter and elsewhere.
“Good morning from my mansion in Sauganash,” Lightfoot posted in reference to widespread rumors last summer that she was buying a multimillion-dollar mansion in the upscale Northside neighborhood.
“But seriously – our city has no time for homophobic, racist and feminine-degrading rumors, today or any day,” Lightfoot continued.
“It is shocking and disappointing to see some media members and verified Twitter users proclaim this trash can as truth.”
Unconfirmed rumors of Lightfoot’s supposedly impending resignation circulated on Twitter from Saturday night to early Sunday morning.
Chicago has been on edge for weeks after a city police officer shot and murdered 13-year-old Adam Toledo last month.
Authorities had previously described the shooting as an “ armed confrontation, ” but disturbing bodycam footage released Thursday showed Toledo unarmed with his hands in the air at the moment he was shot.
In her tweets Sunday, Lightfoot called on city residents to ignore the rumors and stand behind her leadership.
“If people hadn’t noticed, we have big challenges in Chicago that we need to tackle TOGETHER,” she posted.
“Anyone who wants to work with me to progress, I am ready. Even if we don’t always agree, let’s do the work if you really love this city and want to contribute to making it better. The rest, get out of the way, ”she said.
Lightfoot’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.
