Chelsea announced the resignation of Frank Lampard as coach

Chelsea fired his coach Frank Lampard this season for poor results, the team reported on their social networks on Monday, and would be replaced by the German Thomas Tuchel, as he could know ESPN.

With this decision comes the 42-year-old former Chelsea midfielder leaves the position after barely a year and a half, with the team in ninth position in the Eredivisie after 19 games, after the recent loss to Leicester City.

Their last victory was next Sunday, when the club won 3-1 in the FA Cup against Luton.

“It was a very difficult decision, and one that has not been taken lightly by the owner (Roma Abramovich) and the Council,” the club said in a statement.

According to Chelsea, “The recent results and performance are not living up to the club’s expectations, leaving him in the middle of the table with no clear path to improvement”.

The club calls Lampard a “legend” but believes that a change is needed to give the team time to straighten out the season.

In the same note, Abramovich emphasized the “excellent personal relationship and respect” he feels for the coach, but felt it appropriate to replace him “in the current circumstances”.

“He is a major icon of this great club and his status here is not diminishing. He will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge,” said the owner.

Lampard, who took office in July 2019 with a three-year contract to replace Maurizio Sarri, will be replaced by Tuchel, former coach of German club Borussia Dortmund and French club PSG., from where he was fired last December to make way for Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino.

Even the major investment in transfers Abramovich made last summer, with the addition of figures like Kai Havertz, Timo Werner or Hakim Ziyech, has failed to secure Lampard’s hold on a bank as hot as Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had a long run of 17 unbeaten appearances this season, before collapsing in a string of defeats in mid-December to lead rivals to the Champions League places.
