Chancellery criticizes Nebraska governor for refusing to vaccinate undocumented immigrants

The Minister of Foreign Relations responded tonight to the governor’s announcement of Nebraska, Pete Ricketts, that undocumented workers will not be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

“Essential undocumented workers get the vaccine against it COVID-19 is against basic human rights, ”tweeted Roberto Velasco Álvarez, responsible for leading the policy for North America By the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE).

Velasco shared on his behalf Twitter the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states in Article 25 that “everyone has the right to an adequate standard of living for his health and well-being and that of his family, including clothing, food, housing and medical care, as well as necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment,” illness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of life in circumstances beyond their control ”.

The Chancellor Marcelo Ebrard responded to Velasco’s comment and said, “I fully subscribe. Mexico includes everyone in its vaccination plan ”.

Velasco and Ebrard responded in this fashion to Ricketts’ comments on Monday when, in response to a question from reporters about meat packers having the right to be vaccinated, he said that undocumented migrants are not eligible.

“You’re supposed to be a legal resident of the country to work in those factories, so I don’t expect undocumented migrants to be part of the vaccine with that program.”

The Migration Policy Institute recalled that at least 14% of workers in meat packers are from Nebraska have no papers, while on Twitter the comments underscored how essential these migrants are to the survival of these plants.

Maki Teramoto, chief executive of Protection of Mexicanans Abroad, tweeted that “Mexican men and women are workers in a vital industry in Nebraska, keeping the economy moving and feeding American families. Essential workers must have access to the # COVID19 vaccine and medical assistance during the pandemic ”.
