They were found guilty of the crime of unauthorized enrichment. In addition, the ruling prohibits the former president from holding any public office for ten years.

The First Civil Chamber of the Center’s First Section on Tuesday afternoon announced the ruling against former president of the republic, Elías Antonio Saca, and his wife Ana Ligia in the case of unauthorized enrichment.

The former president and his wife were ordered to compensate the state for $ 4.4 million. Antonio Saca must return $ 3.8 million and his wife Ana Ligia must return $ 589,608, the House said.

The ex-president was found guilty of illegally enriching himself with public funds, so both he and his wife must return the money to the treasury.

In addition, the ruling also prohibits the former president from exercising any public office for ten years, as well as paying the procedural costs generated by the court proceedings.

Prosecutors in the case previously assured that the Supreme Court’s Integrity Department (CSJ) discovered seven irregularities through deposits into Saca’s communications companies, known as the Samix Radio Group, which is now run by the National Goods Council (CONAB) for having a domain extinction process.

Initially, the Public Prosecution Service charged the three children of Saca, but the Chamber found it inappropriate to charge them because they had not been civil servants and were not subject to scrutiny of the legislation under which the former president and the former first lady were being tried. .

Former President Saca was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2018 after court disclosing that he had diverted $ 301 million in public funds during his tenure with the complicity of three of his closest officials.

However, the former Salvadoran ruler will serve only eight years of his sentence, as decided by the Second Criminal Justice Court in a special hearing on September 28, 2020.
