A man with a chainsaw was arrested Tuesday afternoon after chasing people at the McDonald’s restaurant in Westbrook, damaging two vehicles and stealing a drink and some food, police said.
Alice Sweet, 26, of Portland was captured by Westbrook police near the Fireside Inn on Riverside Street after she fled the restaurant on Main Street, Westbrook Police Department Captain Steve Goldberg said. Sweet was charged with theft, criminal mischief, refusal to submit to arrest, and violating his terms of release.
The bizarre incident began around 3:30 pm when police received multiple 911 calls about a man who “was chasing people with a chainsaw at McDonald’s,” Goldberg said in a press release.
Sweet entered the restaurant and, turning the saw every now and then, went behind the counter where employees were preparing meals and stealing drinks and food, Goldberg said.
“When the manager confronted the suspect in the parking lot, the suspect started to chase the manager with the chainsaw,” Goldberg said. “The suspect also used the chainsaw to damage two vehicles that were in the restaurant.”
Every police officer on duty in Westbrook responded to the emergency calls. Sweet was located near VIP Tires on Riverside Street, but fled as agents approached. He was detained near the Fireside Inn without incident, Goldberg said. No injuries were reported.
