ABC13 contacted CenterPoint about the situation. CenterPoint initially replied that they were investigating the situation.
They added, “Customers don’t owe this amount. We will update our customers and media as soon as we have a fix.”
Just two hours later, a company spokesperson told ABC13 that the emails had been sent in error “because of a recent technical problem caused by the Houston area power outage.”
They promised to notify customers later this afternoon.

Earlier this week, Houston police warned residents of people posing as CenterPoint Energy employees to come to customers’ homes.
