CDPR hackers reportedly sell Cyberpunk 2077 code after a $ 7 million auction

Multiple CDPR releases on the black market

Last week, we reported how CD Projekt RED had collided with a “targeted cyberattack” in which a group of unknown individuals allegedly stole dizzying amounts of data from the Polish developer, including the source code of some of its biggest and most recent releases.

Initially, the hackers – a group calling itself “HelloKitty” – attempted to ransom the stolen data from CDPR, who made the whole affair public while stating clearly that it was not intended to pay those responsible. This weekend it was reported by cyber intelligence group Kela that HelloKitty held an auction on the “dark web” where it reportedly sold the source code for CDPR’s recent release Cyberpunk 2077Kela reports that the sale took place outside of the auction itself, which reportedly had an opening bid of $ 1 million USD and a sale price of $ 7 million USD.

HelloKitty is also said to have copies of source code for both retail and unreleased 2015 builds The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as well as the code for Witcher‘s spin-off card game, GwentIn a statement posted last week, the CDPR said it believes the personal data of its employees stay safe. The attack and alleged sale is the latest in a series of nightmares for CD Projekt RED, which has defended itself in recent months against numerous lawsuits and negative publicity over the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which prompted CEO Marcin Iwinski to release an official apology video.

CDPR is working with IT specialists and law enforcement officers to investigate the situation.
