CD Projekt RED victim of attack

CD Projekt RED victim of attack - Source code may now be sold (update)

CD Projekt RED has just released a statement acknowledging that they are victims of a cyber attack, attackers have gained access to their internal network by accessing delicate data and source code of their famous games.

The company has been through a difficult year and it looks like things are getting worse. In a press statement on Twitter, CD Projekt RED added a screenshot of a plain text ransom note left on its servers by the intruder. The source code for Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Gwent “and an unreleased version of The Witcher 3 (probably the remaster) are out of date or encrypted. Reading the note doesn’t stop there being private documents from CDPRs. his financial accounting, administration, legal affairs, HR and more were victims.

CDPR stated it will not give in to the attacker’s requests and has contacted police. The hacker gives CD Projekt RED 48 hours to contact him for an agreement, but what is demanded is not stated.

Updated

Earlier today, leaks of potentially legitimate source code began to appear on online forums, as noted on Twitter by cybersecurity account VX underground. This first leak is believed to contain the source code of the CDPR’s virtual card game Gwent. The files were posted on Mega.nz and quickly deleted. However, it didn’t take long for the content to spread across the most famous hacking forums. A site called CyberNews has already downloaded these files and verified that they are actually the source code for Gwent, the card game released by CD Projekt in 2016.

We assume this is a real auction by a real seller who obtained the data. The seller offers to use a guarantor and only allows those who have a deposit to participate – a tactic used by many sellers to show that they are serious and to make sure that there are no scams will take place, “said a spokesperson for KELA (a company that monitors the dark web). An auction is offering source code files for both the Red Engine and CDPR game releases, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales spin-off and the recently released Cyberpunk 2077. The stolen material also contains internal documents, although it is not clear what types of documents or additional material contain the entire cache.

KELA says the auction’s starting price is $ 1 million, with higher bids in $ 500,000 increments and a buy-now price of $ 7 million. Only users depositing 0.1 bitcoin can participate, which is why Kivilevich believes that the hackers are serious about hosting the auction and that the material for sale is likely legitimate as it ensures that no one entering the auction will try the sellers to light up.

Update 2:

As it turns out, there is a bidder source code from Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3, the Gwent card game has been sold. According to the cyber specialists, the seller would have received a ‘satisfactory’ offer outside the auction, so they closed it. Not everyone is convinced that the data has actually been sold. According to security analyst Emsisoft, it is possible that there were no potential buyers at all. The criminals would then have stopped the sale, to give the impression that the source code has been sold.
