Carlos Correa says he is preparing for free agency

Puerto Rican shortstop for the Houston Astros, Carlos Correa, responded Thursday to team management’s six-year $ 120 million bid, stating that he is ready to try his luck at Free Agency once the 2021 season.

“I have given five, six years of my career to this organization. Rookie of the Year, All-Star Games, World Series Championship, multiple good playoff performances. And if they don’t see me here in the long run, another team can see me like that. And there are no grudges or anything. It’s a business, ”said Correa.

Correa will be a free agent at the end of the 2021 season. He said there has been no further talk since the offer was turned down. The MLB campaign starts in a week, on April 1.

‘What things look like … I don’t know now. I think the first offer was very low. And if that’s the way they think about me, and that’s where we are now, I’m going to play this season to try and win another championship and then request a free agency, ”the Puerto Rican added.

Correa, 26, is one of several Puerto Rican players trying to get an extension in the same situation before the season starts. Francisco Lindor is in the same situation with the New York Mets and Javier Báez with the Chicago Cubs.

Some analysts estimate that the contract Correa is seeking would be around $ 200 million, so it seems the $ 120 million figure keeps the team quite separate from the price that would resolve the roadblock.

“Once the season starts, and I start playing, I would play here my last season before becoming a free agent. I don’t think it makes sense to keep negotiating while trying to focus and help my team win games, ”he said.
