Caris LeVert Expresses ‘Gratitude’ In Indiana Pacers Debut After Surgery To Remove Cancer Mass

In his first game since undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor on his kidney in January, Caris LeVert made his Indiana Pacers debut with 13 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes to help his team defeat the Phoenix Suns 122-111 on Saturday.

LeVert admitted feeling “heavy legs” as he struggled to regain his wind and fitness, but said he was satisfied with the results.

“A month and a half ago, two months ago, I didn’t even know if I even knew I’d even be here, especially this soon, just with everything that’s happened, so it’s definitely a level of gratitude and just happy to be on it field, ”said LeVert.

Emotionally, the Pacers organization tried to make LeVert feel at ease.

He had not played in an NBA game as a member of the Brooklyn Nets since January 12, before being traded to Indiana. The small mass on his left kidney was discovered during a physical and medical team test before the transaction was finalized.

At LeVert’s debut in Phoenix, the Pacers hit a two-game series loss in a six-game series. Two-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis posted a triple-double with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

Pacers coach Nate Bjorkgren said he felt LeVert’s presence was a boost for the team. When the security guard entered the locker room after the game, his teammates celebrated his return with loud bangs and support.

“Absolutely, he energized our team and his character is so high,” said Bjorkgren. “He’s such a good person. He’s been a great teammate the whole time he’s been out so our guys were really happy to have him back on the field.”

Bjorkgren expects “a lot more” from LeVert as he continues to adapt.

LeVert said this was the second time he took part in 5-on-5 action since his health problem.

“We have a resilient group. We have great guys on the team, and they were in my ear today throughout the game, even leading up to the game,” said LeVert. “I can’t thank those guys enough, and it’s going to be a special rest of the season, once everyone starts clicking and things like that. We played a great game as a team.”
