On how she dealt with it during the coronavirus pandemic, the thespian said, ‘I got knits at the start of the lockdown and I tried it once, saying,’ I don’t have any f ***** g time to knit.

‘I can’t do this. I can’t learn anything. I’m just going to keep the kids busy and then go to bed and do it again. ” ‘

The movie star went on to have her initial thoughts on Emerald Fennell’s dark comedy thriller flick and how she prepares for months of her critically acclaimed stints.

Mother of two Carey – who didn’t attend drama school – said: When the script got to my agent, I just didn’t know what to do with it. I thought, “ Why would Emerald ask me to do this? ”

‘I said,’ Em, I just gotta tell you I love it so much, let’s do this please. And from that moment on it was just super fun.

‘I didn’t go to drama school, I felt a bit of a chancer, so I thought I had to do a lot of homework to be able to be here.

‘I feel very self-conscious about it. I like being just an actor. I like to just show up and do my thing and then leave them to it. ‘

“The reality of my life now is that I have two kids under five, and I’m lucky if I can learn my lines and appear.”

Released in the UK later this month, Promising Young Woman capitalizes on the idea that women are just as violent, ruthless and furious as men.

The production, already tipped for an Oscar, has been described as ‘Thelma & Louise for the #MeToo generation’, after the 1991 road movie in which two women took matters into their own hands after a sex attack.

Cassie, a 30-year-old who has dropped out of college, is on a mission to avenge the rape and subsequent suicide of her best friend.

During the day, she has a dead-end job in a cafe, but at night, in various bars and clubs, she pretends to be drunk to pick up men who see her as an easy target, before violently pronouncing her own crude justice.

Dressing in eccentric ensembles for her portrayal, the stage actress shared, “I’ve probably never worn a dress like that in my personal life.”

The Shame star also expressed her views on the changing perception of women taking on more experimental roles in film and TV.

Carey said, “We finally understand that the public wants to see stories about women who are not always nice. You still look for them, you still care about them – it’s done beautifully in Fleabag and beautifully done in I May Destroy You.

Some of the things that both characters do are completely morally questionable and unpleasant, but you’re 100 percent behind it all the way.

‘It’s really nice to see people behave badly. I certainly didn’t feel this kind of activity for the first ten years of working. ‘

The March issue of Harper’s Bazaar will be on sale from February 3, 2021.
