Captain Tom Moore, the centenarian war veteran who became a British lockdown icon after an epic sponsored walk to raise money for the National Health Service, has passed away at the age of 100.
Moore’s family announced his death with a message on his Twitter account. He had recently tested positive for Covid-19 and drew statements of support from Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other prominent figures.
“I’m so sorry to hear that Captain Tom has passed away in the hospitalHealth secretary Matt Hancock said on Twitter. “He was a great British hero showing the best of our country and I am sending my best wishes to his family right now.”
Moore, who was knighted by the Queen for his charitable activities, raised more than 32 million pounds ($ 44 million) for the NHS last year after walking 100 laps through his garden for his 100th birthday last year.
