The man’s lawyer said his actions were a “misguided attempt” to support Trump.
A man who has reportedly made an online threat to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y. to “murder”, is facing five charges related to the uprising at the Capitol, authorities said.
Garret Miller was arrested in Texas on Wednesday. His charges include threats and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. A detention hearing is scheduled for January 25.
Newly released court documents detail a series of social media posts that Miller reportedly made on Jan. 6 and in the days following the riot, including threats to the Democratic legislature, a regular target of conservatives, and a US Capitol police officer.
“Killed AOC,” Miller tweeted Jan. 6 in response to a call from Ocasio-Cortez to impeach former President Donald Trump, the indictment said.
In a Facebook discussion on Jan. 10 about the Capitol police officer who fatally shot a rioter, Miller reportedly said: [the USCP officer] and hug his neck with a nice rope[.]”
On January 11, Miller reportedly posted a selfie of himself in the Capitol Rotunda on Facebook. When someone replied in the post, “Bro, you’re in?! Nice!” Miller replied, “just wanted to blame myself a little bit,” the affidavit said.
A few days after the Capitol siege, ‘Miller admitted on Instagram that he had’ a rope in it ‘ [his] bag on that day, ” the affidavit said.
Miller’s Twitter account has been suspended and his Facebook page has been removed. The FBI affidavit included screengrabs of social media posts they attributed to Miller and photos of surveillance footage posted to him in the Capitol on January 6.
In a statement to ABC News, Miller’s lawyer said his client “regrets the actions he has taken in a misguided attempt to show his support for former President Trump.”
“His comments on social media reflect a very ill-considered political exaggeration at very divided times and will certainly not be repeated in the future,” attorney Clint Broden said in the statement. “He accepts responsibility for his actions.”
Responding to news of Miller’s arrest, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “On the one hand, you have to laugh, and on the other, you know the reason they were so bold is because they thought they would succeed. “
Ocasio-Cortez spoke about the threat to reps in a livestream on Instagram on Jan. 12, saying she had “a very close encounter that I thought was going to die.”
“Maybe my colleagues weren’t fully attending the events on Wednesday, but half of – we got nearly half the house dead on Wednesday,” Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” in January. . 10.
