SAN ANTONIO – Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez returned triumphantly after a little over a year of inactivity in defeating the British Callum Smith He united the WBA and WBC super middleweight titles in front of 10,000 fans at the Alamodome in this city.
The judges unanimously ruled the fight in favor of the Mexican. It was Smith’s first setback, who went into battle 27-0.
The meeting marked the first time that Álvarez (57-1-2) has promoted his events outside of Golden Boy Promotions and on the advice of Óscar De La Hoya. The 168-pound champion is now fighting in partnership with Marchroom Promotions.
It was also the first boxing event in the United States to be publicly allowed since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The win opens the door to a possible third meeting against IBF Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin, who returned to action the night before and won by TKO in the seventh round against Kamil Szeremeta of Poland.
