Campaign activists from three causes disagree with a referendum proposed by Abinader

The representatives of the camp in support of the three goals that have already reached their 40th day, expressed their disagreement this Monday with statements by the President of the Republic of Luis Abinader on a bill to approve the holding of a referendum, Dominicans will be able to decide on decriminalization of abortion.

Abinader spoke on the subject in an interview in Madrid with the president of the EFE agency, Gabriela Cañas, about the development of the agenda for his official visit to Spain.

The president assured that while in favor of the three exceptions to interrupt pregnancy, “it is a decision that covers many issues, not only health, but also religious” and that “divides the population,” so it is the people. who have to choose.

For pro-choice activist Patricia Santana, the alternative proposed by the head of state is “highly questionable”.

“This mechanism cannot be used to make decisions on human and fundamental rights issues, such as women’s sexual and reproductive rights,” Santana stressed, noting that “fundamental rights cannot be subject to decisions by majorities”.

He also said that the grounds are not a religious issue and that decisions in living in a democracy should be made by the majority, but with respect for the rights of minorities.

Virtudes de la Rosa, for his part, stressed that while several studies and evaluations “show the favor of the population in light of the three causes, it would set a fateful precedent for the Dominican people if constitutional rights were subject to popularity”.

“That is not allowed. Not with the grounds, with any fundamental right,” he emphasized.

De la Rosa also stated that referendums are called for administrative measures and not for fundamental rights.

The debate will start tomorrow

The representatives of the three causes also stated that following the debate in the Chamber of Deputies about including exceptions to interrupt pregnancy on Tuesday, they will be transferred to the National Congress.

“Yesterday we held a meeting where we reiterated our commitment to develop a battle plan outside of this camp,” they said.

Intoxicated they are stable

On the other hand, people who are intoxicated after eating dessert in the support camp for the three causes are already stable, said Patricia Santana, who also explained that they estimate that the donation of candy they were given contained some toxins.

Santana announced that those admitted to the Uce medical center are already at home and the cameraman and journalist who were also affected are still under surveillance in the Dominican-Cuban.

“The corresponding measures have been taken so that the competent authorities can conduct the investigations and follow up on any circumstance that could be identified as having criminal hands,” said Santana.

Meanwhile, De la Rosa said the brownie package arrived with instructions to be delivered to a specific person and that the sender was an acquaintance.

The candies arrived with a card stating that they had been sent by a person known to one of the companions and they came looking for a companion in a specific way, but that person confirmed that they had not sent parcels here. “the activist explained. .

De la Rosa argued that the confusing situation was caused by “people fighting ideas by promoting hatred of other people” and that these “fundamentalisms lead to this type of behavior”.

He stressed that the accident will not intimidate them in their fight for women’s rights to make decisions “for their lives, for their health, for their dignity.”

De la Rosa defined the situation as a “peccata minuta” that they are not afraid of. “
