California reported 695 deaths from the coronavirus on Saturday, setting a new record for the state’s one-day death toll as it continues to cope with an increase in coronavirus cases.
The new fatalities bring the state’s coronavirus death toll to 29,233, according to the coronavirus data reported by the state.
California also reported 52,636 new coronavirus infections, bringing the cumulative total to 2,621,277.
The numbers come as the coronavirus ravages California after a spate of the fall and winter holidays that has increased hospital capacity in the state. California alone registered 74,000 new coronavirus infections on Monday, more than one one-day record for new cases exceeding 66,000 on December 28, 2020.
Health officials have one emergency mandate on Tuesday, requiring all hospitals to include hospital patients in crisis care amid increasing patient burden, and Gov. Meanwhile, the US as a whole is facing a wave of infections. The COVID tracking project reported that the country saw 310,000 new coronavirus infections on Friday, with many of the cases concentrated in New Jersey and California.
There have been 22,086,436 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US since the start of the pandemic, according to a census of Johns Hopkins University. More than 371,000 have died.
