Health officials in California are calling on COVID-19 vaccine suppliers to stop using a batch of Moderna’s injections after a handful of people vaccinated at the same site all had allergic reactions.
According to FOX5 San Diego, less than 10 people reported reactions after receiving doses at a vaccination site in San Diego last week.
They all seemed to experience a potentially serious allergic reaction during the standard observation period – a type of side effect that the CDC reports that some people experienced when receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine site switched to a different batch of Moderna vaccine after being closed for a few hours, ”said the California Department of Public Health.
The massive vaccination site in Petco Park, the home of the Padres, opened Jan. 11 to deliver vaccines to health workers on the state’s priority list, the station reports.
Nearly a third of a million doses from the Moderna batch were sent to 286 other providers in the Golden State, with no other news of bad reactions.
Still, officials say it’s better to be safe than sorry.
“Out of extreme caution and also because we recognize the extremely limited supply of vaccines, we are recommending providers to use other available vaccine inventory,” the press release said.
Officials noted that there is some risk to any vaccine or medical procedure, and it is highly unlikely that anyone will have a negative reaction.
Moderna, the CDC, and the FDA are all reviewing the batch and hope to learn more this week. Replacement doses are not readily available according to the FOX5.
Federal officials have previously noted that some vaccine trial participants who had cosmetic facial fillers experienced side effects.
