Bucky Brooks recently stated that he doesn’t see Mac Jones as a top three talent in this year’s concept class. In fact, he doesn’t see the former Alabama quarterback as a first-round talent, so it’s hard to imagine the San Francisco 49ers spending four draft picks, including three first-rounders, to acquire him.
Media chatter painted a curious picture after the 49ers traded to third place on March 26. Due to the history of quarterbacks Shanahan has worked with, speculation was running high and Jones was associated with the 49ers.
The story has changed a bit since Justin Fields of Ohio held his second pro day this week. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were in attendance and Fields is now the favorite to succeed Jimmy Garoppolo in Santa Clara.
NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks joined the Rich iron show today and discussed the 49ers’ options with their top pick. With several mock drafts still projecting a Jones-to-Niners screenplay on April 29, Eisen asked Brooks who he thinks will be the choice.
“Justin Fields or Trey Lance,” Brooks replied. “I think the conversation about Mac Jones is just a conversation. I think if you’re Kyle Shanahan, and you go up, you go up to get some remarkable talent. And that talent has to be someone who doesn’t can only do the things you want to do in the script, but not in the script.
Because at the end of the day, you have to compare your quarterback to the other quarterbacks in the division. And if we’re being fair, Rich, NFC has West Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, and Matthew Stafford. In every scenario, do we think of Mac Jones as the player who can be better than all those guys in the next two to three years? Because if we don’t, we shouldn’t make a move for him.
But when we think about the extraordinary talents of the two others (Fields and Lance) mentioned, we can see how their athleticism and combination of arm talent could give them a chance to succeed and some of those guys in the division “I think it must be one of those two other guys, and I think Mac Jones is just a smokescreen.”
Brooks went on to tear down Lance’s skills and NFL potential. You can watch and listen to the entire segment below.

Kiper explains why he would be “very surprised” if the 49ers didn’t draft Mac Jones

ESPN’s Mel Kiper is not among the segment of national writers who are backing a little bit from the story that former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is near-lock against the San Francisco 49ers at No. 3. The analyst let Jones go to the Niners in his latest trial and later joined ESPN’s Get Up! to discuss projection. With Trevor Lawrence expected to land with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Zach Wilson with the New York Jets, and Jones expected to join San Francisco, Get Up! host Mike Greenberg asked Kiper if he considers the first three selections in this year’s draft a slot. “I think they’re a lock now,” Kiper replied. “And

Yet another mock draft has the San Francisco 49ers selecting former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the No. 3 overall pick. However, this one from ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum is a bit different. While some analysts believe that Jones-to-49ers is the most likely scenario, many believe the selection would be a reach, especially with potentially higher prospects Justin Fields and Trey Lance likely still on the board. In the latest ESPN mock draft, Tannenbaum, a former NFL manager, takes the role of general manager for all 32 teams, choosing the players he believes are best suited

Neither Lynch nor Shanahan asked Nick Saban about Mac Jones, a potential 49ers draft pick, on pro day

Keep this under interesting preliminary tidbits. John Lynch, San Francisco 49ers general manager, and head coach Kyle Shanahan attended Alabama Pro Day last week. That made headlines because the duo chose to watch quarterback Mac Jones rather than attend Ohio State’s pro day to watch Justin Fields. Coupled with Chris Simms’ speculation that San Francisco might have traded third place for Jones, that spurred others to seriously consider a Jones-to-49ers scenario. Alabama head coach Nick Saban recently joined The Dan Patrick Show, sharing that neither Lynch nor Shanahan asked him about his former quarterback, who helped lead the Crimson Tide to a national championship. And it wasn’t because they didn’t have the opportunity to do so
