It has been more than two weeks since Antoine Winfield Jr. and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl LV, but Winfield is not that far from winning at Raymond James Stadium.
Winfield, who recently had the Lombardi Trophy tattooed on his arm, donates the $ 7,815 – the amount he was fined for mocking the Kansas City Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill during the big game – to the Buccaneers Youth Leadership Program at the Young Middle Magnet School of East Tampa.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Social Justice Fund, in turn, adjusts Winfield’s pledge, increasing the total amount donated to the school to $ 15,630.
“Because it got a lot of media attention, it was there and I just wanted to run it in a way to make it positive,” Winfield said via Carmen Vitali of the team website. And what better way than to give back to the Youth Leadership program that I have been doing all year round? That kind of came about because I thought about different things I could do. I spent all year with the kids and talk to them and everything, so I think that was a good opportunity to go with those guys. “
The endowment was appreciated by Hillsborough County superintendent Addison Davis.
“Our district greatly appreciates not only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Antoine Winfield, Jr. for this monetary donation that will have a major impact on Young Middle Magnet,” Davis said via Buccaneers.com. “Taking an unfortunate situation and turning it into a positive one is the benchmark for a true champion, and a wonderful example for our students and the entire community.”
It’s another positive take on the game and its aftermath from Winfield, who previously admitted that he didn’t regret showing a peace sign in Hill’s face in the last quarter of the Bucs’ victory.
“The taunting, it was something I just had to do,” Winfield said after the game. “When we played them earlier, Hill went over to us. He turned back in front of my face and gave me the peace sign. So it was only right that I gave him back the peace sign at this point. Felt great to be able to do that. I’m not even going to lie. “
In the Chiefs’ regular season win over the Buccaneers, Hill had himself for a day, flashing his signature peace sign to Winfield after one score, then back-flip to the end zone after another touchdown.
Winfield bided his time and got the last word – or sign, as it were.
A Super Bowl champion after a great rookie campaign, Winfield basks in the glory of the big game, takes it all in and gives back too.
