Broncos will hire a new CEO; John Elway gets a higher ranking position

The Denver Broncos will hire a new general manager who will be in charge of the human resources and athletic departments, the team said.

New general manager and coach Vic Fangio will report to John Elway, who will remain on as president of athletic operations.

“I’ve worked in this role for the past 10 years and from my playing days I’ve always tried to do everything I could to help the Broncos win and improve,” Elway said in a statement. “As part of the transition that I have been thinking about for a long time, I made the decision to take up a senior position and hire a general manager to accompany our sports and staff staff.

“Although I will remain chairman of the sports activities in 2021, the general manager has the final say about the concept, the free service and our selection. This person will have the power to make all sports decisions in a concerted effort with Vic, ”he added.

Matt Russell, vice president of athletic staff, had the opportunity to interview for the position of general manager, but decided to retire and spend time with his family, according to the Broncos.

Elway, 60, has been the leader of the Broncos’ sporting activities since 2011 and helped the team win five AFC West titles and reach two Super Bowls. Regardless, the team hasn’t made it to the playoffs since winning Super Bowl 50.

The Broncos are joining Washington, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Houston, Detroit and Carolina as one of the teams seeking a new general manager.
