British fugitive arrested after venturing to buy ‘Call of Duty’

He escaped from prison and lived on the run – until ‘Duty’ called.

Clint Butler, a 36-year-old British man, had escaped police for months after escaping from prison in November. But the mold ran out after he ventured out of hiding to buy a copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War, West Midlands police said.

The fugitive – who had served 14 years of a 17-year sentence for robbery and possession of weapons – was caught in Birmingham on Jan. 13 after officers suspiciously diverted him and a friend after seeing police, according to the press release.

When an officer asked Butler and his companion why they were in town during the pandemic’s closing, his friend replied, “I’m coming to get the new ‘Call of Duty’ because I can’t stay in the lockdown,” officials said.

The fugitive admitted to carrying marijuana and allegedly gave police a false name, according to authorities.

When the officers said they would manage the dumb duo’s information, Butler mistook the violent video game for real life and attacked the police with kicks and punches, police said.

He is now back behind bars and plans to spend an extra two years breaking out of prison and attacking the officers.

“This was a great job by our officers, instinctively acting that something wasn’t quite right and then challenging the men,” said West Midlands Police Chief Inspector Nick Rowe.

“The situation escalated very quickly, but both PCs put their training to good use by restraining Butler, submitting him and handcuffing him safely, while also calling for help from nearby agents.”
