Bingeing “Bridgerton” lately?
If you’ve ever hoped to step back in time to the 19th century Regency era, where the characters of “Bridgerton” live in hazy luxury, consider this $ 9.8 million Connecticut castle.
Built a century ago in 1913, Freestone Castle is located in the heart of Greenwich and has 11 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms.
Architect James C. Green first built the house for a descendant of the Revolutionary War, General Israel Putnam. The estate has undergone several modern interior renovations, but the historic structure has been preserved.
The castle – consisting of brick and stone – is situated on 4 hectares of land and is a whopping 20,298 square meters.
It last sold for $ 5.5 million in 2017.
The main residence has eight bedrooms and the staff quarters and the coach house three bedrooms.
It’s broken up into a few different sections. At the time, people lived with their servants, so it was designed for that kind of lifestyle, ”Danielle Claroni, the property’s co-listing agent, tells Realtor.
“When you think of a castle, you think of small rooms and kind of dungeons, but these are wide open rooms, with lots and lots of light – beautiful large, bright rooms with high ceilings. It’s really beautiful, ”adds Claroni.
In the style of an English country house, amenities include balustraded terraces overlooking a reflecting pool, formal gardens, a wine cellar and wide lawns. The house also has a tennis court and a garage with 5 doors.
What is now a formal dining room with a roaring fireplace used to be the castle’s ballroom. So that you can enjoy a royal party!
As the castle and surrounding gardens have historical designations, any changes require local approval. But Claroni says it really doesn’t require any updates.
