Breath of the wilderness has gotten quite a few mods over the years, few with the scope and ambition of Second Wind, a story-based expansion that adds new characters, side quests, and bosses.

“Second Wind is a large-scale expansion for Breath of the wilderness which aims to add new content to the game in a similar way to official DLCs, ”the creators of the project write to the Discord server. “We’ve also decided to take it a step further by offering various revisions, bug fixes, tweaks, and new gameplay elements for players to explore.” It’s currently built for the Wii U version of the game, but a Switch version is a possibility later on (mods are only available through emulation and on hacked consoles).

Here’s a video showing the latest development progress:

In addition to adding dozens of new animals, weapons, and enemies, Second Wind also includes changes ranging from customizing the atmosphere in each of the game’s 120 shrines to give them a more unique feel, to more detailed bow quiver to make them more aesthetically pleasing. to make’. . ” According to a project wiki, Second Wind also includes a lot of elements from other existing mods, rebalancing things like crafting, horseback riding, and the final fight against Ganon. It even includes masks that have been ported to the game Ocarina of Time and Majora’s mask, which give Link new possibilities.

With more than 50 people contributing to the project, the mod page For Second Wind says it’s currently 60% complete, but players are already beta testing it through the group’s Discord. There is even a roadmap with preliminary plans for when the remaining functions will be completed. For example, a new underground crypt mini dungeon has an intended completion date of June. Maybe by then we’ll have news about when Nintendo plans to release Breath of the Wild 2, but in the meantime, it’s nice to see avid fans move forward with their own unofficial expansions.
