A Boston doctor with a shellfish allergy had a severe reaction after receiving the Moderna coronavirus vaccine.

Dr. Hossein Sadrzadeh, who works as a geriatric oncologist at Boston Medical Center, became dizzy and experienced an increased heart rate after taking the shot on Christmas Eve.

It is the first serious reaction of its kind documented to date with the Moderna jab, which was approved last week and rolled out Monday.

Federal agencies are investigating at least six cases where people have had anaphylaxis after receiving the Pfizer / BioNTech alternative vaccine.

Sadrzadeh also describes how he felt his tongue go numb and stinging as his blood pressure dropped as he broke out a cold sweat.

“It was the same anaphylactic reaction that I experience when I eat shellfish,” Dr. Sadrzadeh to The New York Times. “I don’t want anyone to go through that.”

Sadrzadeh quickly used an EpiPen he’d brought with him in case he got such a response.

He was taken to the emergency room and discharged four hours later after investigation.

“The main concern for me as a human and as a doctor … I have to give people the floor … People should have the EpiPen with them if they have allergic reactions,” Sadrzadeh told CBS46, urging Moderna. to investigate further.

In a statement, David Kibbe, a spokesperson for the Boston Medical Center, said Dr. Sadrzadeh ‘felt that he was developing an allergic reaction and that he was allowed to administer his personal EpiPen himself.

“He was taken to the emergency room, evaluated, treated, observed and discharged. He is doing well today. ‘

In the weeks since the vaccines were distributed, there have been few allergic reactions in those who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

During Pfizer’s pilot phase – when 44,000 people were examined and half received the vaccine – a small number of allergic reactions were recorded.

But the company said the rate at which people suffered from it was comparable to the number of people with allergies in the general public, and thus was not abnormal.

Sadrzadeh’s case is the first known reaction to someone who received the Moderna injection.

The vaccines are made with similar ingredients, with both requiring two injections a few weeks apart. It is not known which ingredient in the coronavirus vaccines can cause serious allergic reactions in some people.

“It is known that one of the components present in both vaccines, polyethylene glycol, can sometimes be associated with allergic reactions,” said Dr. Peter Marks, head of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at a final briefing. week.

‘That could be a culprit here. And that’s why we’ll be watching very closely as we see the Moderna vaccine rolled out, ‘he said.

The vaccine makers and the National Institutes of Health are considering conducting clinical trials of Covid-19 vaccines in highly allergic populations in an effort to help understand the rate of allergic reactions and what causes them.

CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said information about responses to the new vaccines will be posted on the website next week.

The agency has recommended that allergy sufferers should still receive the injections and wait 15 minutes after the injection before leaving the medical center.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF MODERNA’S SHOT?

There were no dangerous side effects definitively related to the inclusion of Modern in trials.

But there were a handful of alarming, albeit temporary, effects.

If you have skin filings, your face may become extra swollen after the injection.

Two people with fillers had facial swelling – in their lips and cheeks – after receiving the injection.

It turned out that they had had the same reaction if they also received a different vaccine.

There’s no clear cause for Bell’s palsy – a temporary form of facial paralysis – but herpes or diabetes are risk factors.

Three people who received an injection of Moderna in the study developed Bells palsy (as did one in the placebo group).

Moderna said this doesn’t appear to be caused by the vaccine, but it and the FDA will be watching closely for more cases if the shot is approved.

Anyone who has previously had an anaphylactic reaction should be monitored for a total of 30 minutes.

To date, more than 1.1 million vaccination shots have been given to people in the US, and serious allergic reactions remain extremely rare.

“This should not deter people who are not clearly at increased risk,” Dr. Merin Kuruvilla, an allergist and immunologist from Emory University at the Times.

Thousands of health workers have received the shot from Pfizer to date, and it is hoped that – with two shots now on the market – will further accelerate the roll-out of vaccinations.

The Moderna vaccine is available in quantities from 100 doses and can be stored in refrigerators at standard temperature for 30 days.

Pfizer’s vaccinations, on the other hand, come in boxes of 975 doses, must be shipped and stored at -94 F (-70 Celsius), and can only be stored for five days at standard refrigerator temperatures.

Officials in Texas and Arkansas told Reuters they expect Moderna to be the premier vaccine for rural areas, which often lack the ultra-cold storage equipment to store full trays of Pfizer’s vials.

Once the plastic on a Pfizer 975 dispenser is opened, recipients have only 120 hours to use the vaccine.

“Logistics will be easier with the Moderna vaccine,” said Jesse Breidenbach, senior executive director of pharmacy for Sanford Health, which operates nearly four dozen hospitals in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.

“Thirty days in the fridge makes it a little easier to handle,” said Breidenbach.

Moderna vaccine can cause swelling in people with facial fillers, dermatologist warns

Lip fillers respond poorly to one of the coronavirus vaccines, an FDA advisory committee has noted, putting celebrities, including Kylie Jenner, at risk.

Anyone with cosmetic facial fillers could experience swelling and inflammation after several subjects experienced side effects, according to experts.

A California dermatologist said the response was immunological, ABC7 reported yesterday.

Dr. Shirley Chi said all side effects were easily managed with steroids and anti-histamines, adding, ‘Your inflammatory immune system gets fired up when you get a vaccine, that’s how it should work.

“So it makes sense that you would see an immune response in certain areas where they see a substance that does not naturally occur in your body.”

Patients who received the Moderna vaccine, which was approved by regulators last Friday, all had swelling in the area where the filler was placed.

Two patients had cheek filler six months before their vaccination and one had lip filler two days after the vaccine. The reactions were quickly resolved with medical attention, added Dr. Chi to it, so it shouldn’t stop people with fillers from getting the shot.
