Like his own boss fights, Borderlands 3 continues. Today Gearbox revealed details about it Director’s Cut, an upcoming DLC for the looter shooter coming out on March 18.
Director’s Cut adds a series of recurring challenges called Vault Cards, concept art, storyboards and something players have long been asking for: a raid boss.
Like Crawmerax the Invincible from the first game, this new raid boss – a giant fire-breathing pig named Hemovorous – also has the suffix ‘the Invincible’. You know that door on Pandora that’s been locked since day one? Hemovorous lives behind it. You have to posit 500 Eridium each time to unlock the door and start the fight.
The Director’s Cut DLC also adds story-driven side missions. One, featuring the budding siren Ava, focuses on a series of interstellar murder mysteries. Apparently the story is formatted as a podcast, as if Serial was out of fashion seven years ago.
Director’s Cut is the second part of Borderlands 3second season pass, which retails for $ 30 and included this past fall Designer’s Cut DLC. Season pass owners also receive a bonus set of cosmetics not available through individual add-on purchases. (You can pick up the Designer’s Cut bit by bit for $ 15.)
G / O Media can receive a commission
Gearbox initially described Designer’s Cut as a “ roguelike experience, ” which it kind of really is. The Designer’s Cut DLC will send you to a new area – the snowy Stormblind Complex – and wipe out your gear. You have to find new equipment and fight waves of enemies, while an advancing storm narrows the map, with the goal of eventually taking down a (relatively easy) boss. You can place any extra gear you earn at different kiosks on the map so you can keep it permanently. In any case, it’s more of a cooperative battle royale than a roguelike, but hey, what are terms?
The recurring seasonal event Broken Hearts Day will also run from tomorrow to February 25. Broken Hearts Day is brilliant in its simplicity. Color-coded hearts float around the world. Shoot them. Get loot. As with most Borderlands 3 events, you can toggle it on or off, but it’s unclear why anyone would actively shut down something that brings in a full Skittles rainbow of loot.
Was on the shelves 18 months ago, Borderlands 3 has received four additional campaign extensions, all of which were part of the first season pass. And then, out of the blue, Gearbox announced the second season pass last fall. Like each of the boss fights in the game – including, believed to be Hemovorous the Invincible –Borderlands 3 continues.
Beyond Borderlands 3, Tell stories Tales From the Borderlands will return to digital storefronts on Xbox One, PS4, and PC on Feb. 17. One problem: the rereleased version of the game will no longer feature screens at the end that compare your choices with those of other players.
